Overview
Evoxac is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of dry mouth symptoms in people with Sjögren’s syndrome. Evoxac is also known by its drug name, cevimeline hydrochloride.

Evoxac is a cholinergic agonist, which means it activates muscarinic receptors that help stimulate the secretion of fluids such as saliva. This can help relieve dry mouth symptoms by increasing salivary gland activity.

How do I take it?
Prescribing information states that Evoxac is taken as an oral capsule. The recommended dose is typically taken three times a day. The medication should be taken exactly as prescribed by a healthcare provider.

Side effects
Common side effects of Evoxac include excessive sweating, nausea, rhinitis (nasal inflammation), diarrhea, excessive salivation, urinary frequency, asthenia (weakness), flushing, polyuria (frequent urination), headache, sinusitis (sinus infection), upper respiratory tract infection, dyspepsia (indigestion), abdominal pain, urinary tract infection, coughing, pharyngitis (sore throat), vomiting, back pain, injury, rash, conjunctivitis (pink eye), dizziness, bronchitis, arthralgia (joint pain), surgical intervention, fatigue, pain, skeletal pain, insomnia, hot flushes, rigors (shaking chills), and anxiety.

Rare but serious side effects may include cardiovascular problems such as myocardial infarction (heart attack), arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat), angina (chest pain), and hypotension (low blood pressure). Other rare reactions include gastrointestinal disorders like gastrointestinal bleeding and peptic ulcer; liver abnormalities; blood disorders such as thrombocytopenia (low platelet count); respiratory conditions including asthma and pulmonary embolism (lung blood clot); nervous system issues like hallucinations, tremors, and confusion; and urinary problems such as renal pain and urinary incontinence. Cevimeline may also cause visual disturbances that impair night driving.
